Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 + are two major devices that have large screen sizes beyond 6 “on the market today. We know many readers are wondering which device is more worthwhile to have? This article tries to simplify the process of choosing which device is better for you based on a few six key criteria.

Specification

Both devices have the same processor, Exynos 8895 eight core. This processor is now the most powerful in the benchmarking chart. The difference lies in the size of RAM. Galaxy Note 8 comes with 6GB RAM while the Galaxy S8 + comes with 4GB of RAM. More applications can be opened before the app is refreshed in Note 8. We also recognize when using Samsung DEX, it works much better with Note 8. Here the advantage is in favor of the Galaxy Note 8.

Software

Galaxy Note 8 uses Android 7.1.1 with the Samsung Experience 8.5 launcher. It has just received updates three days ago to roll out operations again. Galaxy S8 + still uses Android 7.0 with the Samsung Experience 8.1 launcher. Both devices have received security updates for August. Updates to Android Oreo also confirmed will be accepted on both devices.

We noticed that the Note 8 interface is smoother especially when exchanging applications. The animation is faster without any intervals. Users of S8 + have long been aware of the animation unlocking the app is less fluent. Here’s another advantage over Galaxy Note 8.

Camera

Here is the most significant difference between the two devices in view. Galaxy Note 8 is Samsung’s first device with optical zoom dual-camera system. It is also the first device on the market with dual-OIS on both wide-angle and telephoto lenses. In terms of picture quality using a wide-angle camera, we feel no difference directly between the two devices. The f / 1.7 lens and the same 12-Megapixel sensor are used.

The telephoto lens allows 2X optical zoom and new Focus Live function. The optical zoom in Note 8 is very good though only using the f / 2.4 lens. With optical stabilizat, on the picture is not blurry if the device is not held steady. Live Focus also brings artistic bokeh function. It’s still not perfect (sometimes refuses to work) but is Samsung’s reply to Portrait Mode iPhone 7 Plus.

Which device is more worthwhile here? This is a subjective answer. If you do not need optical zoom, the camera on both devices is the same level and best in its class. But if you are like us, optical zoom facilitates daily tasks. Live Focus also produces artistic images. Depending on the user, these two additional functions may not be necessary.

Battery

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 comes with 3300 mAh battery while the Galaxy S8 + comes with a 3500 mAh battery. Somewhat weird S8 + comes with a larger battery even though it has a smaller screen (6.2 “compared to 6.3” on Note8). Not surprisingly, Galaxy S8 + has better durability. On a simple use of the device lasted almost 19 hours.

For comparison, Note 8 only lasts about 12 hours. The best S8 + SOT ever recorded is almost 9 hours compared to nearly 7 hours on Note 8. For those who are concerned about battery resilience Galaxy S8 + is a smarter choice. Both are equipped with a fast charging system with a full charging period of about 110 minutes.

Audio

No stereo speakers are supported on both devices. Only a mono speaker is located at the bottom. Audio jack is still ongoing as Samsung has yet to gather “courage” to remove this I / O as Apple, HTC and LeEco. Audio capabilities are equivalent and show improvement over Galaxy S7 Edge. In the audio category of the decision is the series.

Value Added

Samsung Galaxy Note 8

Quick charging system, wireless charging, IP68 waterproof, almost all-screen design, HDR screen, face scan, retina scan, NFC and Samsung Pay exist on both devices. All of these are the latest functions that should be available on the main device 2017. Galaxy Note has some extra functions in the form of dual-cameras, larger RAM and S-Pen stylus support. No major device on the market now has a built-in stylus like N0te 8

At the time of writing the official sales price of Galaxy Note 8 is RM 3,999 while Galaxy S8 + is sold at RM 3,699. Does paying RM300 be worthwhile to enjoy the extra functions of Note 8? This can not be answered because the definition of “worth it” varies by individual. For us, the optical zoom function and Live Focus is a job requirement and paying RM300 for enjoying it is worth it. It is up to each individual to make purchases smarter.
